Most of us want to make a difference in the world. We want want to know that our life counted for something. That when we die, we will be remembered. And not just remembered for something minuscule, but for something that was big-time. Something that changed the world. At least that's what I hope for my life. But sometimes that desire can be a little disheartening. Sometimes people just don't give a rip about the thing you're pouring your heart into.
It's funny how we underlyingly assume everyone should love the things we love. We become frustrated when people don't subscribe to our new blog project or don't "like" the fan page of our new business or don't donate to the new charity that has stolen our hearts. But that's the beautiful thing about people. We're different. Unique creatures with life experiences that have shaped what we love. And if the masses don't catch our vision as quickly as we'd like, if we feel like we aren't making a ding-dong difference at the present moment, the responsibility remains to press on and then press on some more.
In the book of Zechariah, God addresses this very thing by saying not to despise the day of small beginnings (Zech 4:10). This is particularly hilarious for me because Zechariah 4 is where God gave me and Garry our vision for The Lampstand. Through this verse, He reminds us not to worry about numbers and feedback. He entrusted us with this vision and wants us to keep moving forward. And really, there are probably more people watching what you and I are doing than we might think.
So, if you are feeling discouraged or worn down, continue pressing in. Don't despise the day of small beginnings. Everyone wants to have the big impact. But it's the little things done well over time that really do build the big things.
And really, what is the definition of "big"? It might be something inconsequential to you that helps change someone else's eternity. In fact, you may not even know about until your body is maggot food. So yes, press on my friend. Press on, and don't despise the day of small beginnings.
ReplyDeleteOh it's the small beginnings that I love! It is in these moments that faith is grown and perseverance is sharpened! And how much I love reminding myself that God was with me then so...why wouldn't he be with me a season of bigger beginnings...if that makes sense. Because really...what is "big" or "small". I guess the most important part is keeping our eyes on Him and yearning to only please Him and do as He has called us to do. I guess it's in that attitude where my heart begins to soften when no one has commented on my blog or subscribe haha! Oh God how you also yearn to keep us humble! I love that scripture! Thank you Nicole for never stopping for this is truly food for the soul!
